POSITIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL FOR RECHARGEABLE LITHIUM BATTERY AND RECHARGEABLE LITHIUM BATTERY COMPRISING SAME

PURPOSE: A positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided to increase charging capacity and safety and to reduce irreversible capacity of a battery, by comprising an additive compound in which a metallic compound layer is formed on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION: A positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises a lithiated compound capable of reversible intercalation/deintercalation of lithium and an additive compound represented by chemical formula 1: Li_xNi_yM_(1-y)O_2 in which a metallic compound layer is formed on the surface thereof. In chemical formula 1, 2.01 <= x <= 2.1, 0.95 <= y <= 1; and M is selected from the group consisting of Al, Co, Ni, Mn, Fe and their mixture.
