A vertical axis wind turbine comprises a vertical structure 1 which supports multiple vertical axis wind turbine rotors 2, 5, 12, 13 and houses multiple generators 8. Gearing systems located within the structure 1 may drive each electric generator 8 via an external annular gear within the rotors 2, 5, 12, 13. Rotor bearings and bearing housings located on the structure 1 or rotors 2, 5, 12, 13 may allow the rotors 2, 5, 12, 13 to rotate about the structure 1 so that it acts as a shaft. The rotors 2, 5, 12, 13 may contra-rotate to balance the forces across the structure 1. Stators 3 may be located between rotors 2, 5, 12, 13 to reduce downdraft and updraft interference between the rotors 2, 5, 12, 13. Self regulating pitch control of rotor blades 2 may increase torque and power output, and limit the speed of rotation to safe levels. |
