New human parainfluenza virus type 2 (HPIV2) variants (I) belong to a subgroup not including the Greer, Toshiba, V98 and V94 isolates and have an F protein with one of five defined amino acid sequences given in the specification and/or an HN protein with one of four defined amino acid sequences given in the specification. New human parainfluenza virus type 2 (HPIV2) variants (I) belong to a subgroup not including the Greer, Toshiba, V98 and V94 isolates and have an F protein with one of SEQ ID NO:24, 29, 34, 39 or 44 (defined amino acid sequences given in the specification) and/or an HN protein with one of SEQ ID NO:26, 31, 36 or 41 (defined amino acid sequences given in the specification). Independent claims are also included for: (1) genomic RNA of (I) and its cDNA reverse transcript; (2) envelope proteins of (I); (3) nucleic acids coding for the envelope proteins; (4) nucleic acids comprising at least 132 nucleotides of an F or HN protein coding sequence of (I); (5) primer pair comprising a 5'fragment of 14-30 nucleotides of SEQ ID NO:62-66, 67-70 or 83-86 (defined nucleotide sequences given in the specification) and a 5'fragment of 14-30 nucleotides of the sequence complementary to SEQ ID NO:62-66, 67-70 or 83-86; (6) set of primers comprising at least one primer pair as above; (7) primer forming part of a primer pair as above; (8) probe (P1) for specific detection of (I) by realtime amplification with a primer pair as above, comprising a fragment of 14-30 nucleotides of SEQ ID NO:62-66, 67-70 or 83-86 or its complement; (9) kit for diagnosing a respiratory disorder or infection, comprising a primer pair and/or probe as above; (10) probe (P2) for use on a chip, comprising a fragment of one of SEQ ID NO:57-61 or 71-82 (defined nucleotide sequence given in the specification) or their complements; (11) solid microfluidic support comprising a probe P2; (12) antibodies that bind to envelope proteins of (I) but not to an envelope protein of the Greer NC003443 isolate; (13) kit for diagnosing a respiratory disorder or infection, comprising an antibody as above. |
