<p>A composition for use in the consolidation of soil comprises a mixture of (a) an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, (b) an aqueous solution containing the product of reaction in the presence of a basic catalyst between acrylamide and formaldehyde, (c) a catalyst for the polymerization of the acrylic constituents of (b) and (d) a gelling reagent (defined). The gelling reagent acts upon the alkali metal silicate and is, for example, triacetin, sodium bicarbonate or ethyl acetate. The catalyst (c) is a conventional free-radical polymerization catalyst and an activator may also be present. The composition is applied to the soil before substantial polymerization of (b) takes place.</p> |
