Disclosed is a sound absorbing material having a light weight and possessing excellent sound absorbing properties. The sound absorbing material is a fiber sheet that is formed of fibers comprising at least 50% by mass of porous fibers having a number of pores open to the surface and has an air-flow resistance of 0.05 to 3.0 kPa?s/m. The porous fibers having a number of pores open to the surface as such have air permeability and sound absorbing properties. The sheet formed of such porous fibers having air permeability and sound absorbing properties exhibits sound absorbing properties by spaces provided among the fibers and thus can be a sound absorbing material having a very high sound absorbing effect.
