<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To normally hold a segment sucked by using a vacuum pad without causing displacement and assemble the segment to an existing segment. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This segment assembling apparatus 1 makes the segment 3 assembled in a ring shape inside a tubular shield frame 2 which constitutes an outer shell of a shield machine. The segment assembling apparatus 1 includes: a movable carriage 6 which holds the segment 3, and which moves in the circumferential, radial and axial directions of a tunnel so as to assemble the held segment 3 in the ring shape; the vacuum pad 22 which is provided on the movable carriage 6, so as to attract an inner peripheral surface of the segment 3 to be assembled, by the suction force; a protrusion 25 which is provided on the movable carriage 6, and engaged with a recess 24 formed in the cutting face-side end surface 23 of the segment 3 attached by the suction force through the use of the vacuum pad 22; and an abutting portion 51 which is provided on the movable carriage 6, so as to abut on the pit mouth-side end surface 50 of the segment 3 sucked by the suction force by using the vacuum pad 22.
