PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect preignition in an actual time to prevent the preignition from occurring during the same cycle as the detection, characterize the preignition, and quantify the preignition by a plurality of devices used in an engine at present. SOLUTION: A physical model which indicates the advancement of the pressure in a cylinder within the range of one combustion not followed by the preignition is selected as the function of the rotating angle of the crankshaft of the engine. Using the model, a cylinder pressure Pe(α) is predicted, and an intake pressure is measured. The start of abnormal combustion is detected by comparing the first value of the variable calculated using the measured value of the cylinder pressure with a second value of at least one of the variables measured using the predicted value of the cylinder pressure. The magnitude of the preignition is characterized by repeating these steps above at some determined crankshaft angular intervals. The advancement of the abnormal combustion detected in a combustion chamber is controlled using the advancement of the abnormal combustion as the function of the magnitude of the preignition.
