<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide characteristics close to ideal spectral characteristics for which the characteristics of a desired color reproduction system are taken into consideration, in a color imaging system incorporating a color separation prism. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The spectral characteristics of the color separation prism are measured by a measuring apparatus 71 beforehand, and general spectral characteristics of the entire imaging system when incorporating the color separation prism in the color imaging system are obtained on the basis of the measured spectral characteristics. A coefficient computing part 72 obtains the deviation of the spectral characteristics between the general spectral characteristics and the desired ideal characteristics of a reproduction system, and obtains a matrix coefficient for bringing the general spectral characteristics close to the ideal characteristics of the reproduction system as a color characteristic conversion coefficient on the basis of the deviation of the characteristics. The color characteristic conversion coefficient is stored in a coefficient storage part 61 of the imaging apparatus. In a signal processing part 62, the operation of multiplying the color characteristic conversion coefficient stored in the coefficient storage part 61 to respective color signals outputted from imaging elements 4R, 4G and 4B is performed and they are outputted as video signals Vout.
