PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of appropriately performing the synchronous timing of a light emitting source while suppressing the deterioration of a photo-conductor, a method for controlling image formation, a program for controlling the image formation, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus 1, light sources 11 and 12 are turned on and driven at specified synchronous timing before starting main scanning, and the laser beams from the light sources 11 and 12 are scanned in the main scanning direction by a polygon mirror 13 to make them enter the photo-conductor, and the laser beams are detected by a synchronous detecting sensor 19 arranged outside an image forming region of the photo-conductor to output a synchronous detecting signal to a synchronous detecting part 3. When a synchronous abnormality is detected from the synchronous detecting signal by the synchronous detecting part 3, the light sources 11 and 12 in which the synchronous abnormality exists in an LD controlling part 7 are forcibly turned on with a specified low light quantity by a comprehensive abnormality detecting part 22. An automatic returning controlling part 4 counts the outputting timing of the synchronous detecting signal outputted by the synchronous detecting sensor 19 by a main scanning counter 6 to correct the synchronous timing.
