<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for use in separating solid matter from a liquid in a sewer pipe, an effluent treatment facility in a factory, a solid-matter separator, or the like. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The separator 1 for separating solid matter contained in a liquid includes a rectangular separation container 2 constituted of sides 3 and a bottom face 4. The separation container 2 is equipped with an inflow port 6 that allows a liquid to flow thereinto in a manner heading from one of a pair of the sides 3 facing each other toward the other, a guide 7 that guides the flow direction of the liquid having flowed thereinto from the inflow port 6 so as to form a swirl flow in the vertical direction or in the horizontal direction, and a screen 8 (9) formed on the other of the pair of sides 3 in a manner contacting the outer circumferential face of the swirl flow formed, so that the liquid having flowed into the separation container 2 from the inflow port 6 is allowed to swirl and to pass through the screen 8 (9) and is discharged from the separation container 2 to the outside.
