PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device which can be used as a surgical retractor, or as a valve/seal, or used for making an access by another instrument or hands easier in laparoscope-assisted surgery. SOLUTION: A wound protector and retractor instrument 1 includes a sleeve 2, a distal side ring 3 and a proximal side ring 4. The sleeve is guided around the distal side ring and is free to move axially relative thereto. The proximal side ring is fixed to the inner end on the proximal side of the sleeve. The end of the sleeve is reinforced by a gripping ring 15. The sleeve extends from the proximal side ring and the distal side ring is placed between an inner layer 2a and an outer layer 2b of the sleeve. After the distal side ring is scrunched up, and inserted through an incision 6, and the sleeve is pulled upward, the outer layer is raised upward, with the inner layer being drawn around the distal ring, which results in shortening the length between the proximal and distal side rings in the axial direction, extending the sleeve, and keeping the incision wide open, providing an access port for a surgeon to insert his hand and/or an instrument to perform a procedure.
