<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black toner excellent in charging characteristics of negative charging, to provide a method for producing a black toner by which such a black toner is efficiently produced, and an image forming method using such a black toner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The black toner is characterized in that a surface of a toner base particle including carbon black as a colorant and a resin material is chemically modified with a polycarboxylic acid salt. A weight average molecular weight of the polycarboxylic acid salt is preferably 3,000-30,000. The polycarboxylic acid salt is preferably an ammonium salt of a polycarboxylic acid.
