PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charging method and a charger, which achieve restoring charging which brings charged capacity close to a rating capacity, and subsequently, achieve retaining charging which retains the charged capacity, while diagnosing charging performance of a secondary battery. SOLUTION: The charging method is provided to perform charging of the secondary battery for a motorcycle, by a current supplied from a commercial power source. The charging method has a starting step S200, which starts charging of the secondary batter;, diagnosing steps S300, S700, which determine whether or not the secondary battery is chargeable after the starting step S200; restoring charging steps S400, S800, which brings the capacity of the secondary battery close to the rating capacity after the diagnosing steps S300, S700 when it is determined that the secondary battery is chargeable in the diagnosing steps S300, S700; and retaining charging steps S500, S550, S900, S950, which retain the capacity of the secondary battery that approaches the rating capacity, after the restoring charging steps S400, S800.
