PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buttonhole sewing machine which can form a buttonhole appropriately. SOLUTION: A control device 7 of a sewing machine 1 determines the forming of a buttonhole by determining that the elevating degree of a load against the travel distance of a knife receiver 30 exceeds a specific threshold value memorized in a memory 72 after the value of the load detected by a load cell 60 is turned into descending from rising at least once to keep a cloth cut so that the forming of a buttonhole can be determined more accurately.
