<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus or the like which detects size of an original at high speed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When there are a plurality of extracted candidates for the size of an original as a result of image processing on an image signal which is based on an initial pre-scan operation, lengths of the sub-scanning direction of the originals of the candidates are determined, and based on the determined lengths, non-reading sections and reading sections in the sub-scanning direction of the originals are determined. The size of the original is specified based on the result of image processing on an image signal which is based on an additional pre-scan operation in the determined reading sections. In the non-reading sections, the carriage is moved at a speed higher than that in the reading section, since imaging with the light reflected from the original is not necessary therein.
