The element has an aspect covering (33) made of opaque material, and including cylindrical or tapered openings (34) formed in its thickness. A light source formed by a diode, is positioned behind the covering so as to backlight the covering. A stopping light diffusing layer (35) is partially filled in the openings, and has obturation plates that are housed in the openings at the level of their inlets so as to obturate the openings. The covering is chosen from a group comprising textile, wood, leather or opaque sheet made of expanded or compact plastic material. An independent claim is also included for a door panel of a motor vehicle, comprising a luminous trim element.
