<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, removing foreign matter deposited in an EGR cooler during operation of the internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device is applied to the internal combustion engine including the EGR cooler cooling EGR gas, and an EGR valve (flow rate regulating valve) regulating a flow rate of EGR gas flowing in the EGR cooler, and controls operation of the EGR valve in order to remove PM (particulate matter) by the EGR gas flowing in the EGR cooler (S40) when it is determined as such a foreign matter deposition state that the predetermined amount of the PM (particulate matter) or more is deposited inside of the EGR cooler (S10:YES). Specifically, the EGR valve (flow rate regulating valve) is fully opened after being temporarily fully closed, thereby allowing the EGR gas to flow at a breath into the EGR cooler to remove the PM. Alternatively, pressure pulsation is generated in the EGR gas by repeatedly opening/closing the EGR valve in a predetermined cycle, thereby removing the PM by the pressure pulsation.
