PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator that facilitates adjustment of color reproducibility while maintaining size thereof, and to provide a projection type image display apparatus. SOLUTION: The illuminator 120 and the projection type image display apparatus 100 include: a light source 10; a first color separation part 71 separating white light to synthesized light (green component light and blue component light) and red component light; a second color separation part 72 separating the synthesized light separated by the first color separation part 71 to the green component light and the blue component light; a first optical modulation element 30R modulating red component light; a second optical modulation element 30G modulating the green component light; and a third optical modulation element 30B modulating the blue component light. The illuminator 120 and the projection type image display apparatus 100 include a first color separation adjusting part 61 interposed between the light source 10 and the first color separation part 71 and modulating the light so that the polarization direction of the synthesized light and the polarization direction of the red component light may be different from each other, and the first color separation part 71 includes a reflection type polarizing plate.
