<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that where a cleaning brush is rotated following a charging roller, the peripheral speed of the cleaning brush tends to be unstable due to permanent deformation of the cleaning brush although there is a benefit in cost, while where the cleaning brush is rotated by gear connection with the charging roller, the peripheral speed of the cleaning brush tends to be stable although a cost increases. <P>SOLUTION: In an image forming portion using the cleaning brush that is long, the cleaning brush and the charging roller are driven and coupled by a gear train. In an image forming portion using the cleaning brush that brush length is comparatively shorter, the cleaning brush is rotated by following the charging roller. This ensures a stable charging process for a long time in the image forming portion using the cleaning brush that brush length is longer, whereas a cost can be reduced in the image forming portion using the cleaning brush that brush length is comparatively shorter.
