<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for identifying position that is used for inspecting the inside of a space surrounded by the surface of a boiler furnace, or the like and can identify a position even if a reference point cannot be disposed on a floor surface. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A front sidewall and a rear sidewall are in parallel each other and are perpendicular to the left and right sidewalls. A plurality of projections in the same shape are provided in parallel at an equal interval on the lengthwise and crosswise sidewalls. A position inside the space to be identified is on the sidewall. A laser disposed at the position applies laser beams vertically to calculate the distance from the irradiator to the upper and lower walls each according to each arrival time. Two laser beams are applied from the irradiator in two directions orthogonal to two sidewalls orthogonal to a sidewall where the position to be identified exists at an interval of half the projection interval. Also, the position of the irradiator is identified by calculating the distance to the two sidewalls each from the irradiator according to the arrival time and arrival time difference of the two laser beams to the sidewall or the projections.
