<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect whether a nozzle is present or absent inexpensively and speedily without using an expensive distance sensor by using an image recognition device already mounted on a mounting head of a surface mounting machine in order to recognize a substrate mark or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The surface mounting device equipped with a nozzle replacement device 22 having a nozzle holding hole 23 for holding a nozzle 20 for replacement detects whether the nozzle is present or absent from a state of light leaking upward when light is emitted upward from below the nozzle holding hole.
