PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method capable of detecting the scanning timing of respective stages of multiple-reflection mirrors. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes: a deflection means having a rotation shaft and at least two stages of multiple-reflection mirrors provided on the rotation shaft with a shift in angle in the rotating direction; a split means which splits a light beam from a light source at least into two beams and allows the respective split beams incident on the multiple-reflection mirrors of the different stages; a light receiving means which detects the beams scanned with the deflection means; and a detection means which detects the time at which the respective stages of the multiple-reflection mirrors scan the beams on the basis of the detected interval of the beams with the light receiving means, wherein the deflection means is characterized in that the respective stages of the multiple-reflection mirrors are disposed to be shifted in the angles in the rotating direction so that the detection intervals do not become an equal interval.
