PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce cost of an absolute position detecting device for detecting an absolute position of a movable element, with respect to a stator in a linear motor. SOLUTION: In the linear motor, the movable element is disposed relatively movably between a pair of stators, and sensors A, B and sensors C, D are provided respectively on both sides of the movable element. A magnet 18 is provided on one of the stators so that the distance between the sensors A, B is changed into a sinusoidal wave shape, and a magnet 19 is provided on the other of the stators so that a distance between the sensors C, D is changed into a cosine wave shape. Since a set of amplitudes determined from an output signal from the sensors A, B and an amplitude determined from an output signal from the sensors C, D corresponds one to one in absolute position, the absolute position can be detected based on the amplitudes. In this manner, since the absolute position is detected by utilizing the magnet provided on the linear motor, a magnet or the like, is not required to be separately provided, to thereby reduce cost.
