PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternative catalyst method for producing a mixture of ethylene and carbon monoxide.

SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a mixture of ethylene and carbon monoxide by bringing ethane and an oxygen source into contact with a catalyst comprising synthetic cryptomelane or octahedral molecular sieve. Production of an alkyl methacrylate by condensing an alkyl propionate with formaldehyde is also provided.
