PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, suppressing knocking possibly caused when required engine output from an idle operating state is increased in a case where delay opening of an intake valve is performed in the idle operating condition. SOLUTION: The intake valve 9 of the internal combustion engine 1 is provided with a hydraulically-driven valve timing variable mechanism 13 and a lift variable mechanism 14, and intake air volume is adjusted based on the required engine output calculated according to the manipulated variable of an accelerator pedal 27. A continuously variable transmission 30 with a gear ratio changed based on the required output is connected to a crankshaft 7. In the idle operating state, the delay opening of the intake valve 9 and the closing thereof at a bottom dead center are performed. When the required output from the idle operating condition is increased, the valve timing of the intake valve 9 is changed to an advance side, and also an increase in the intake air volume according to an increase in the required output is suppressed until the valve timing reaches a specified value in a process of changing to the advance side.
