<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve multilevel gradation of an electrophoretic device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electrophoretic device includes a first electrode, a second electrodes, a dispersion system containing an electrophoretic element that migrates by an electric field applied between the first electrode and the second electrode, a first switching element connected to the first electrode, and a capacitive element having a first terminal and a second terminal and accumulating charges between the first terminal and the second terminal, with the first terminal connected to the first electrode. The device is configured to generate a predetermined potential difference between the first electrode and the second electrode in a first period and to have no potential difference between the first electrode and the second electrode in a second period.
