PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element satisfying both of brightness and a wide color reproduction range, with a simple configuration, as a reflection type display element using an electrophoretic system. SOLUTION: The display element includes a plurality of cells (cells 10, 20 and 30) which are arranged on or in a support and each of which encapsulates: first particles (white particles A, C and E) that have the property of scattering light over an entire visible range and are positively or negatively charged; second particles (coloring particles B, D and F) that have the property of absorbing light of a specific wavelength range in the visible range and scattering light of ranges other than the specific wavelength range and are charged to a polarity opposite to that of the first particles; and dispersion media (dispersion media 13, 23 and 33) that have the property of allowing the light of the specific wavelength range absorbed by the second particles to pass through and absorbing the light of the ranges other than the specific wavelength range. The display element further includes counter electrodes (a common electrode 4, first electrodes 1A, 2A and 3A and second electrodes 1B, 2B and 3B) to which a voltage or a current is applied to move the first particles and the second particles in the cells.
