The transmission (1) has gear wheel sets (9-12) that are selectively adjustable by friction-synchronized gear clutches. An auxiliary force-operated transmission brake (17) is brought in effective connection with an input shaft (2). A brake control device (18) automatically actuates speed difference arising depending on switching condition of the clutch of a target gear. The control device stays in connection with sensors (19-23) for detecting switching position of a gearshift lever or transmission elements of a switching mechanism, and speeds of the input shaft and an output shaft (4). An independent claim is also included for a method for supporting switching of a manual transmission.
