摘要 A sintered cermet and a cutting tool are provided which have high toughness and high chipping resistance. The sintered cermet comprises: a rigid phase containing titanium as a major component and comprising one or more members selected from carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of one or more metals selected from the metals belonging to Groups 4, 5, and 6 of the periodic table; and bonding phases comprising nickel and cobalt as major components.  The bonding phases are present in an inner part of the cermet and are of two kinds having two crystal lattice constants B1 and B2 when examined for crystal lattice constant by the Pawley method.  Alternatively, an inner part of the cermet gives two peaks assigned to the (220) plane of the rigid phase, i.e., a smaller-angle-side peak and a larger-angle-side peak, and a modified part is present near the surface of the cermet, the modified part giving three peaks assigned to the (220) plane of the rigid phase, i.e., the smaller-angle-side peak, an intermediate-position peak, and the larger-angle-side peak.
