The method involves detecting a character string, which is inputted by a user as a part of a designation of the target. A quantity of target designations is determined in dependence of the detected character string, while those target designations are selected from a pool of target designations, which comprise the character string. The determined quantity of target designations is displayed on a display unit (2) for the user. A selection of a target designation met by the user is detected from the displayed quantity of target designations. An independent claim is included for a device for inputting a target for a navigation system.
