Acetone is produced by introducing gaseous propylene into an acidic aqueous solution containing mercuric, nitrate and ferric ions, and also sodium, potassium, calcium or ammonium ions, at 40-100 DEG C., the concentration of the mercuric ions being less than 1 g. ion/litre, the numerical ratio of nitrate ions to mercuric ions being between 20:1 and 300:1, of ferric ions to mercuric ions between 0.01:1 and 0.1:1 and of hydrogen ions to mercuric ions between 0.5:1 and 10:1. An oxygen-containing gas is preferably introduced at the same time. The solution may also contain mercurous and ferrous, ions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,012336.ALSO:Aqueous solutions used in the oxidation of propylene to acetone contain (a) mercuric or mercurous nitrate, (b) ferric nitrate or iron alum, (c) sodium or potassium nitrate and (d) nitric acid. p Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,012,336.
