The method involves feeding exhaust gas flow from an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) line (9) of an EGR system (8) to a fresh-air line (2). The exhaust gas flow is divided by a gas flow divider (13) during flow from the EGR line to the fresh-air line through activation of a control element (14), so that the gas is flown back partially to the EGR line and an exhaust-gas line (3). The EGR system is operated with the gas flow divider in the absence of the back pressure.
