[Also in Division G3] A method of producing a design in relief of a surface where such design includes as its third dimension a raised projection from a background level, comprises preparing a pattern having a master design in two dimensions portrayed by a medium which is different from that of the underlying surface, scanning the pattern with a sensor in a series of successive adjacent traverses, passing a cutting tool in corresponding traverses across an expanse of a work element, and moving the cutting towards into and out from the work element in correspondence to whether the background or design is sensed. The design may be machined on say an embossing roller 26 from a pattern comprising a transparent belt illuminated from the rear havthe design 74 thereon by coupling a photo electric detector to the advance mechanism of a tool slide 10 the detector and slide being traversed in a succession of adjacent passes. The velocity ratio between the belt and workpiece may be adjusted to produce longitudinal and or transverse deformation of the design. The depth of cut may be adjusted by substituting various patterns or adjusting the response of the advance mechanism. Changes in depth may be arranged in a graduated manner. The workpiece is revolved and the slide traversed in a series of producing passes the tool being advanced when the sensor is passing over the pattern background and retracted when passing over the design, or oppositely. |
