Hydrocarbons are cracked under suitable conditions in the presence of a catalyst comprising particles of Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pt, Pd, Cu Cr2O4 or a crystalline metal aluminosilicate as a catalytically active ingredient located in the pores of particles of a base material inactive relative thereto for organic compound conversion, the base particles having a minimum diameter of 2 mm. and having pores at least 50% of which are greater than 50m in diameter, the active ingredient particles being less than 50m in diameter, the weight of active ingredient so located being at least 0.5% of the weight of base. Examples describe the cracking of a gas oil using a rare earth exchanged zeolite loaded into SiO2-Al2O3.ALSO:A catalyst comprises macroporous base particles having a minimum diameter of 2 mms. and having at least 50% of the pores of a diameter greater than 50m and finely divided particles of Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pt, Pd, CuCr2O4 or a zeolite smaller than 50m in diameter and comprising at least 0.5% by weight of the base particles. The zeolite may be loaded with R.E. metal ions. The base particles may be SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, MgAl2O4, ZrO2, TiO2 or Zr SiO4. Both catalyst constituents may be loaded onto a non porous cores.
