1,091,714. Universal joints. GLAENZER SPICER. May 26, 1966 [May 26, 1965]. No. 23654/66. Heading F2U. In a constant velocity ratio universal joint of the kind wherein a drum 1 and hub 6 respectively fast with shafts 2, 5, have axial grooves 3, 7, engaged by torque transmitting caged balls 4, the cage is formed from an inner flange 8 and an outer flange 9. The flange 8 has two active spherical surfaces 10, 13, sliding on the drum 1 and hub 6, respectively. The flange 9, as shown in Fig. 1, is formed of two parts 9a, 9b, and also has two spherical surfaces, 14, 16, sliding on the drum and hub respectively. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the outer flange 9<SP>1</SP> is made in one piece, and retained on the drum by bearing (22), friction ring (25), and a sealing bead (24), all held in place by a circlip (26). In Fig. 7 (not shown), the grooves (3) and (7) are inclined with respect to the axes of their respective shafts. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the outer flange is retained by a rigid sleeve (34) surrounding the flange and carrying an internal friction ring (33). The ring (33) may be omitted, Fig. 9 (not shown).
