A marine barge-carrier comprises a plurality of ballast tanks (1 to 15), Figs. 1, 3 and 4 (not shown), so that the buoyancy can be varied to permit barges to pass while afloat on to or off either of a pair of decks (A, L) through a corresponding opening at the stern, said decks being situated above the waterline when the vessel is under way. The opening in the stern for the lowermost deck (L) is closed by a water-tight door or gate (B) when the vessel is under way whereas the opening (C) for the other deck (A) either remains open or is closed by a similar gate (not shown in the drawings). Alternatively, the barge-carrier comprises a platform 101, Figs. 5A and 5B, in the stern whereby barges 120, 121 can be raised from the water to the level of any of a plurality of decks whereon rollers 113 are mounted to facilitate movement of the barges to or from stowage places, similar rollers being provided on the platform. The barges are moved upon the rollers across the decks by carriages (136), Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), which are supported by rails (134, 135) and connected to windlasses (142, 143) by cables (137), a pivoted coupling plate (138) being attached to each carriage and adapted to engage with a post (139) at a corner of each barge. The platform is connected to a plurality of hoists 102 to 105 by cables 109 to 112. A watertight door 106 for the lowermost deck L can be raised or lowered by a further hoist 107.
