A lathe comprises a tool 23 held stationary during turning and arranged so that the tool vibration is predominantly longitudinal. The work 1 is held in a chuck 2 rotated by an hydraulic motor in a quill 4 advanced by an hydraulic or electrically-operated actuator. The headstock 5 is movable vertically on a slide 6 by hydraulic or screw means. The slide 6 may be moved instead of the quill 4. A tool store 9 contains pairs of magazines 10, 11 and 12, 13 containing, in one, end-tools such as drills, and in the other of a pair, turning tools. The tools are retracted when not in use. The lathe is numerically-controlled. The tools may be as shown in Figs. 3 or 4 or 5 and may be inclined to the planes of those Figures. |
