In a ball and socket joint, at least one of the bearing members is formed as a high grade metal casting, the metal being grey cast iron, aluminium, or aluminium bronze. The preferred metal is spheroidal cast iron containing spheroidal graphite which provides a lubricating action: the cast iron may be hardened e.g. by induction hardening, case hardening or quenching, after casting, or during casting may be alloyed with chromium, magnesium or molybdenum with subsequent inoculation treatment with silicon; the bearing surface may then be hardened by quenching. Aluminium and aluminium bronze may be hardened by precipitation hardening. One form taken by the invention is that of a ball and socket joint to which traction stress in a direction 9 may be applied, comprising a housing I with a pin aperture at one end and closed by an expanded-in lid 8 at the other end. A joint pin,: having a head 6, rotatably passes through a ball element 3 which element is made of grey cast iron, preferably spherical cast iron. The head 6 has an annular shoulder 4 abutting against a flat face 5 on the ball element, the spherical face of the latter being brought into sliding relation with the lower inner face of the housing by an insert 7, of rubber or polyurethane which is pressed against the spheroidal face of the head 6 by the lid 8; the joint pin can thus both rock and rotate relative to the housing. Another form comprises a part ball element 10 on which is mounted by means of a spigot 12 a second part ball element 11 of cast iron, aluminium or aluminium bronze. The invention also includes a ball and socket joint wherein the housing has an interior bearing cap cast from one of the said metals, and a joint comprising a ball member carrying two diametrically opposed joint pins, the ball bearing against a bearing liner cast from one of these metals and lining the housing. |
