<p>Changing a communication protocol of a field device 112a-c, 16a-c in a process control system 100 is performed by decoupling from the field device 112a-c, 16a-c a first removable communication module 124a-c, 126a-c which communicates using a first communication protocol and coupling a second removable communication module 124d-f, 126d-f which communicates using a second communication protocol. After coupling the second removable communication module 124d-f, 126d-f, the field device 112a-c, 16a-c communicates using the second communication protocol. The field device 112a-c, 16a-c is coupled to a first communication channel on an input/output card 1332a-b,134a-b and communicates through the first channel when using the first or second communication protocols. This prevents the need for re-landing or re-terminating the wires of the input/output card 1332a-b,134a-b when changing communication protocols or communication modules 124a-c, 126a-c, 124d-f, 126d-f.</p> |
