In the production of cyclic oligomers, e.g. cyclododecatriene from butadiene, in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal and a halogen capable of forming a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, the reaction product is contacted with sufficient water to convert halogen to hydrogen halide and sufficient inorganic base to neutralize the hydrogen halide. The catalyst is preferably an organo-aluminium compound and a transition metal halide. Allowance should be made for water hydrolysing hydrocarbyl groups and should preferably be in excess; calcium hydroxide is the preferred base. |
