A protective shield for the upper wall of a blast furnace with a double bell, double hopper charging device comprises a series of arcuate plates 30 suspended by chains 40 attached to eyebolts 42 extending through tubes 28 disposed in the upper wall or dome 10, said eyebolts being threaded into nuts 46 associated with a split washer 44. Abrasion resistant wear plates line the blast furnace wall near the stock line 6. To replace a plate 30, nuts 46 and washer 44 are removed and the plate with its associated chain 40 and eyebolt 42 is allowed to fall into the furnace. A new plate is lowered by a rope threaded through hole 34 through a hole 56 in the upper port 18 of the dome 10 on to the large bell 14, chains 40 with eyebolts 42 &c. being attached at holes 32 and 36. Further ropes with connectors at the end are lowered through tubes 28 the connectors being attached to the eyebolts, the large bell 14 is lowered and the plate allowed to fall through into the furnace controlled by the rope attached at hole 34 and another rope attached at the same place and passing through a diametrically-opposed hole 56. Ropes attached at holes 32 and 36 are then hoisted, drawing the eyebolts through the tubes 28, after which a split washer is placed below each set of nuts and welded together to form supports for the plate 30. The various ropes are severed and the process repeated with other plates. |
