Dyeing compositions comprise an aqueous solution suspension or dispersion of a dye and a liquid organic solvent for the dye plus a solid aromatic compound dissolved therein which acts to improve the rate of uptake of dye by keratinous fibres (i.e. the compounds dissolved have melting points above the dyeing temperature). The above compositions are employed to dye materials particularly keratinous materials by contacting the material with the composition. The solid aromatic compound is preferably present an 1-5% of the composition and contains an aromatic ring and at least one of the groups carboxylic acid, amide, or substituted amide, hydroxyl and esters thereof, nitrile, aldehyde, ketone, halogen, amine, alkoxy, cerido or an aliphatic group which is substituted by at least one hydroxy or carboxy group carboxylic acids, mono or polyhydric phenols and chlorobenzene are particularly preferred. Many liquid organic solvents are specified as ore acid, premetallised, mordant, direct, disperse, solvent and reactive dyes.
