Process for dyeing fibres

Polypropylene fibres which contain a nickel phenolate of a bis (p-alkylphenol) sulphone are dyed at elevated temperatures in a liquid medium with an o-nitrosophenol compound which complexes with the nickel phenolate providing yellow-brown shades. The nickel phenolates have the formula:- in which R is alkyl of 1-20 carbon atoms, Y is an anion, n is 1 or 2 and m is 2n-2/u where U is the valance of the anion Y. In the chelates formed are nickel atom may be chelated with one or two molecules of nitrosophenol. Preferably the dyeing is effected by treating in a 1% bath of o-nitrosophenol at 50 DEG C rising to the boil, adjusting the pH to 5-6 and dyeing for 1-2 hours.
