<p>Apparatus (1) for breaking glass bottles comprises a main housing (2) supported on a cabinet (4) within which a wheelie bin is located for collecting broken glass from the bottles. The main housing (2) forms a main chamber (10) within which a rotor (20) carrying a pair of bottle engaging members (22) is rotated by a drive shaft (18) for shattering the bottles on engagement therewith. A discharge outlet (28) from the main chamber (10) delivers broken glass into the wheelie bin in the cabinet (4). An inlet duct (29) is provided for delivering glass bottles into the main chamber (10). The inlet duct (29) comprises an upstream duct (34) which inclines downwardly to a downstream duct (33) which in turn inclines downwardly to an inlet (30) to the main chamber (10). The downstream duct (33) extends radially from the main chamber (10) and the upstream duct (34) extending from the downstream duct (33) at an angle of approximately 90° in a direction which is opposite to the tangential direction of movement of the bottle engaging members (22) past the inlet (30) to the main chamber (10) for avoiding broken pieces of glass being propelled by the bottle engaging member (22) through the inlet duct (29).</p> |
