808,788. Treating slag. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 21, 1956], No. 35656/56. Class 22. A process for the removal of sulphur from blast furnace slag comprises allowing molten slag in the form of a plurality of fine streams or as a fine spray to fall through an atmosphere of oxygen. The molten slag falls downwardly through the interior of a hollow gas-tight tower 1 up or down which a stream of oxygen gas is passing. The tower, of cast-iron or refractory brick, is provided with an inlet 2 for molten slag and an outlet taphole 5 for removing treated slag, whilst one or more pairs of tuyeres 6, the members of each pair located diametrically opposite each other admit oxygen gas, the sulphur dioxide gas formed passing out of the tower through a valve-controlled outlet 7. The stream of molten slag entering the tower is scattered into a spray by impinging upon a baffle 9, mounted near the top of the tower.
|
