A filter, used to exclude mussels from cooling water intakes in seaside steam power plants, comprises a conical screen 2 located in a pipe 1 and a toroidal chamber 5 opening into pipe 1 just upstream of where screen 2 joins the pipe wall, chamber 5 having two tangential inlets and an oppositely disposed tangential outlet whereby wash water flows into the chamber and sweeps solids therefrom. Vanes 9 may support the apex of screen 2 and impart rotation to the main stream to urge solids centrifugally into chamber 5. Tangential nozzles could deliver additional water into pipe 1 to impart rotation upstream of screen 2. Screen 2 may be cleaned by closing an upstream valve arid using wash water flow in chamber 5 to rotate whole mass of water outside screen 2.</p> |
