The method involves storing a characteristic model and a corresponding position of front and rear wheels (2-5) in a centralized logic controller or central unit (10) of a monitoring system in a motor vehicle (1). Location phases of the position of the wheels are established with reference to a preliminary phase by processing and transmitting a model representing variations of values of a terrestrial magnetic field at each wheel. Received model is compared with the stored model, and the position of the corresponding wheels of the motor vehicle is deducted at the central unit. An independent claim is also included for a device for locating a position of front and rear wheels of a vehicle, comprising electronic boxes.
