To remove the inherent torque which exists in a circularly knitted fabric knitted from an S or Z twist yarn the take down rollers are revolved at a speed slightly faster than or slightly slower than the speed of the needle cylinder. The resultant fabric has the needle wales slightly inclined to the longitudinal axis of the fabric. The drive to the needle cylinder is from a shaft which also transmits the drive to the frame supporting the take down rollers. The latter drive is through interchangeable gearing the ratio of which is selected to provide the necessary relative movement between the cylinder and the frame supporting the rollers. |
