PURPOSE: A refrigerator and a controlling method thereof is provided to determine the time to defrost by measuring the wind speed of air passed through an evaporator using a wind sensor installed on the upper side of the evaporator. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerator(1) comprises the following: a main body(10) including a space to store food in the low temperature; a door(20) selectively sealing the space; a cool air generation chamber including an evaporator generating cool air while being installed in one side of the main body; a ventilation fan assembly(330) discharging the cool air to the space while being installed in the upper side of the evaporator; a detecting apparatus detecting the speed of the air passed through the evaporator; and a controller operating a defrost heater(340) when the value detected from the detecting apparatus is smaller than a pre-fixed value.
