A nuclear reactor and a heat exchanger separated from each other by radiation shielding are disposed in a vessel which is mounted within a second vessel; a first annular zone is defined by the adjacent walls of the two vessels, and the wall of the inner vessel is a double wall having between the two walls a further annular zone; a secondary coolant is circulated through the first annular zone at a temperature below the temperature of the primary coolant leaving the heat exchanger. The reactor 2 is supported on a radiation shield 28 mounted at its periphery on the inner wall 22 of the double-walled inner vessel. The heat exchanger 4 is mounted indirectly on a bed-plate 20, which also supports the double-walled container. The second or outer vessel 6 is of concrete, and acts as a restraining vessel for the primary coolant pressure. The object of the invention is to protect this vessel from the hot primary coolant, and this is achieved by passing cool CO 2 gas through the regions A, B and C at a slightly higher pressure than the primary coolant pressure. Three embodiments are described. In the first, as shown, secondary coolant passes from pump 72 through lines 74, 76 to zones B and 10. Gas from B flows up through annular zone F and out through pipe 78. Gas from fuel handling zone 10 filters down to zone C through leakage ducts in the fuel channel cap 38, and radially out through zone C to the exit. A portion of reactor primary coolant (also CO 2 ) is bled off through line 84, cleaned, and fed into the secondary coolant circuit; there will be slight compensatory leakage of secondary coolant into the primary circuit. In the second embodiment, a single series secondary circuit is used: 72, 74, B, A, 10, standpipes, C, 78, 80, 72. In the third embodiment, no reversal of flow takes place in the shield 12; the flow is: 72, 74, B, A, C, standpipes, 10, and, via an outlet pipe in 10, to the pump 72. In the fourth embodiment, all the secondary gas passes through the standpipes into the primary coolant, instead of directly to the pump 72. The pipework and circulation are as in Fig. 1, except that circuits 76, 78 are removed.</p>
